The telemedicine team from Sankara Nethralaya-Kolkata was invited by theDeputy Superintendent of Police, Belpahari, to conduct an eye camp at Belpahari, a remote village, in West Bengal on December 4 & 5, 2010.
Given its rugged topography, conducting an eye camp in this region proved to be quite challenging for the telemedicine team. Five hundred and thirty patients were screened at the two-day camp. A host of officials from the State Government’s Health Department and senior security personnel, who visited the camp, appreciated the efforts of the Sankara Nethralaya team and called for similar eye camps to be held in the region.
Around 80 patients will undergo a cataract surgery at Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata, and 258 individuals will be provided with spectacles. The cost of surgeries and spectacles will be borne by the West Bengal Government.
