Healthy Career Choices in Health Care

What branch of education to pursue after completing class 10 or 12? A perennial question, with the stock answer being engineering or medicine. However young people had an opportunity to discover a whole range of interesting, high growth courses in the healthcare sector that could help them build great careers, at a career counseling session organized by the Sankara Nethralaya Academy the academic arm of Sankara Nethralaya. Prof S Ramani , Principal of the Academy welcomed the students and parents gathered. A Mahalingam, Assistant Registrar gave a detailed brief about the Institution, infrastructure, its capabilities and goals, he highlighted that the healthcare service sector is booming and there are many career opportunities here, with institutions like the Sankara Nethralaya Academy offering many specialized diploma courses to meet the need for enhanced manpower in this segment. Sri A P Irungovel, Senior Manager – Patient’s Education & Counseling dept of Sankara Nethralaya  gave an informative presentation on the topic ‘Goal – Towards better healthcare services”.

Mrs C G Sreedevi, Prof Hannah Priya, Dr Vandhana and Dr Anuja Singh the Program Coordinators briefed on each of the courses being offered as a detailed and seperate presentation. The session touched upon the 2 years diplomas in Ophthalmic Nursing Assistant, Operation Theatre Assistant and Anesthesia Technology and B.Sc in Medical Laboratory Courses offered by the TSNA and recognized by the TN Dr MGR Medical University and 2 year – Diploma in Refraction and Dispensing courses for +2 completed candidates.

The scope of the Ophthalmic Nursing Assistant course where the students learn about various ocular disease and their causes,  assist in ophthalmic surgical procedures,  provide pre and post-operative care to patients and to act as primary and secondary resources to patients, care givers and healthcare professionals was explained in detail. The Operation Theatre and anesthesia technology course which prepare the students for the critical role of assisting the anesthetist, surgeon or nurse in various procedures and to sterilize and disinfect OT rooms following NABH protocols was also highlighted in detail.
