CHENNAI: Sankara Nethralaya on Saturday honored some of its patrons and well-wishers by presenting them with the Friends of Sankara Nethralaya Award.
The recipients included violin maestro Sri. T.N. Krishnan, who performed 10 benefit concerts across the U.S. in 2007 to mobilize funds for Sankara Nethralaya. His son Sri. Sriram Krishnan performed 10 Jugalbandhi Concerts this year to raise funds for the institution.
Other awardees felicitated by Sri. Lakshmi Narayanan on Saturday evening were: Sri. J. Jayaraman, former Chairman and Managing Director, Cochin Refineries; Dr. Mohan Rajan, alumnus and Medical Director, Rajan Eye Care Hospital; Lion G.V. Raman, Lion S. Raghavan and Lion S.N. Harinarayanan of the Lions Club Central Madras; Smt. Kousalya Appukutty and Smt. Surekha Mehta, trustees of SWAN; advocates Sri. N. Venkatesan, Sri. S. Ramasubramaniam, Sri. M.S. Krishnan; and Sri. NDJ Renganath, Managing Director of Prarthana Theatre.
Sri. Lakshmi Narayanan said that all donors had faith in the ability of Sankara Nethralaya to contribute to the eradication of preventable blindness. He laid stress on the relevance of technology in reaching the goal. He had made a personal donation to the hospital as also had the Cognizant Foundation.
Sri. V.Vaidyanathan, honoured artist and writer Sri. Manohar Devadoss, who had raised funds for our institution by selling his sketches. Sri. Devadoss planned to institute an endowment in memory of his wife Smt. Mahima Devadoss and is at present raising funds for the Pediatrics project.
Dr. S.S. Badrinath urged members in the audience to take to others the message of the need for funds to continue the work being done by Sankara Nethralaya. He recalled the organisation’s association with noted advocate and economist Late Sri Nani Phalkiwala and his wife Smt. Nargis, the couple after whom one of the blocks in the new building had been named.
Dr. Lingam Gopal, and Dr. Tarun Sharma, Director, Shri Bhagwan Mahavir Vitreoretinal Services, Sankara Nethralaya, and Dr. Mohan Rajan, spoke.

The function was followed by a Grand Jugalbandhi Concert, performed by Sri. Snehashish Mazumdar, Sri. Sriram Krishnan, Sri. Subrata Bhattacharya and Sri. Rajasekar.
