Head of Sankara Nethralaya’s Contact Lens department chosen for yet another international accolade!

The International Association of Contact Lens Educators’ has chosen Dr Rajeswari Mahadevan the dynamic Contact Lens department head at Sankara Nethralaya as the recipient of the first ‘ IACLE Contact lens educator of the Year’ award for the Asia Pacific region.  This award is instituted for the first time this year. The award is a high recognition of the pioneering role and accomplishments of an individual in the field of contact lens education and awareness creation. The award has been instituted by the IACLE a leading provider of educational and information resources essential for contact lens education. IACLE was started in 1979 as a non-profit and is dedicated to raising the standard of contact lens education and promote the safe use of contact lens worldwide. The IACLE award is sponsored by Cooper Vision and supported by the British Contact lens Association.It is noteworthy that the association gives only one award per region and Dr Rajeswari has been selected for the very first award for the Asia Pacific region. This year’s award would be presented at the ‘British Contact Lens association Clinical Conference & Exhibition at Birmingham, UK scheduled to take place from the 6th to 9th June 2014.

Dr Rajeswari heads Sankara Nethralaya Contact Lens clinic and is also a lecturer of optometry at the Elite School of Optometry. She is the second Indian to be awarded a PhD in optometry and the first to in the field of Contact lens. She has also completed a 9 week PROSE clinical fellowship at the Boston Foundation for Sight, USA. Dr Rajeswari was honoured as a ‘Fellow of the Scleral Lens Education Society’ for specialty in scleral lens fitting. The society specializes in imparting knowledge and training to Contact Lens Practitioners in the science and art of fitting sclera lenses for Corneal transplants and Ocular Surface disorders.

The Contact lens clinic at Sankara Nethralaya plays a major role in educating users, conducting research and seminars on Contact Lens usage under her vibrant stewardship. The clinic has a whole range of contact lens comprising Pediatric, prosthetic, X-chrome, and variety of lenses like scleral, semi-scleral lenses to meet the needs of challenging contact lens requirements.
