Vision Research Scholar’s critical study on Retinoblastoma wins high recognition

Dr S. Vandana

Research scholar at the Kamalnayan Bajaj Institute for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and Assistant Lecturer at the Sankara Nethralaya Academy, S.Vandana, pursuing her advanced research in the prevention of Retinoblastoma or cancer of the eye, at the department of ocular pathology was awarded with a Doctorate by the Birla Institute for Technology and Science for her critical findings on the role of a lipogenic enzyme fatty acid synthase in causing Retinoblastoma.

Her  doctoral thesis titled “Targeting Lipogenesis in Retinoblastoma: Evaluation of Chemical Inhibitors of  Fatty Acid Synthase (FASN) as Anti-Cancer Agents” was evaluated by Dr. Jasbir Kaur from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and she was awarded her Doctorate by the Birla Institute of Technology and Science on the 18th of June 2013. It is noteworthy that Ms. S. Vandana has also conducted in-depth investigations on the anti cancer effects of chemical inhibitors like Cerulenin, Triclosan and Orlistat in Retinoblastoma cells cultured in Vitro in the past.

Dr S. Vandana was guided and assisted in her doctoral work by Dr S.Krishna Kumar, HOD, Ocular Pathology Department and Deputy Director, Kamalnayan Bajaj Institute for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and Dr PR. Deepa from BITS, Pilani.
