Dr H.N. Madhavan wins prestigious award at international symposium on viral infections


The III ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF the INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL VIROLOGISTS ((IAMPVC) AND INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON “CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES IN THE PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF VIRAL INFECTIONS held at Chennai”

A two day international symposium on “Challenges and strategies in the prevention and management of viral infections” was conducted by the IAMPVC at Triple Helix auditorium at CLRI on 9th and 10th November 2012.

The symposium was inaugurated by Dr.H.N.Madhavan, President, Vision Research Foundation after which the auspicious Kuthuvillaku was lit by him along with Dr. Hansel Fletcher, Professor, Chair Division of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, School of Medicine, Loma Linda University, California.

The Society of International Association of Medical and Pharmaceutical virologists (IAMPVC) awarded the ‘Professor S. Subramanian Oration Award’ for the year 2012 to Dr.H.N.Madhavan on the occasion for his oration on “Insights of molecular techniques in the diagnosis of viral infections’. The talk was well received and he was awarded a citation and a medal.

Following the oration, Dr. Hansel Fletcher, Professor, Chair Division of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, School of Medicine , Loma Linda University, California delivered a novel and highly informative lecture on the role of anaerobes in the oral cavity in the activation of oral viral infections particularly EBV.

In the afternoon session, three guest speakers namely Dr. Wilson Aruni (Loma Linda university, California), Dr. Ramasamy Paulmurugan (Stanford university, California), delivered interesting lectures on the role of nano particles in diagnostics and drug delivery in the management of viral infections. Dr. Thirumurugan (TANUVAS, Vepery, Chennai) gave an overview on ‘Toll –like receptors and its variations present in animals’.

This was followed by the presentation of Dr. K. Venkataraman Endowment Lecture by Dr.Nalini Ramamoorthy former director of King Institute and presently a WHO consultant on the topic “Role of WHO in the control of viral infections mainly with special focus on Dengue”.

Dr. Soumiya Swaminathan, Director TRC, ICMR, delivered a talk on ‘HIV and tuberculosis co-infection’ on 10th November and Dr.Priya Abraham, CMC, Vellore explained the current strategies on HIV treatment.

Other informative research works presented on the occasion include a paper on ‘Role of Host factors that regulate HIV infections in Humans’ by Dr.A.R.Anand former PhD student, Sankara Nethralaya (Associate professor, The Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, USA) and ‘Changing molecular profiles of re-emerging arboviruses in India’ by Dr. Sreekumar, Rajiv Gandhi Center for Biotechnology, Thiruvanandapuram.

Dr. J. Malathi, Reader, Microbiology Department, Vision Research Foundation delivered the invited lecture on “Ocular Herpes viruses” which was very well received.

Overall the symposium was very informative and served as an eye opener for current trends in the field of virology.
