Saturday the 29th of September 2012, was a blessed and memorable day for Sankara Nethralaya and its members; His Holiness Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swamigal, the great spiritual leader, exponent of the Dwaitha philosophy and Pontiff of the Pejawar Mutt of Udupi was making his divine presense at the Sri V.D Swami Auditorium to bless the institution and members of the Sankara Nethralaya family. The pontiff and his entourage made their presence at the stroke of 5:00pm and were received with Purna Kumbha by Dr SS.Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya and Dr HN.Madhavan, President, Vision Research Foundation after which the Swamiji visited the Bio-Chemistry and Cell Biology laboratory and blessed the ‘Mass Spectrometry facility’ by lighting a lantern and also blessed the scientists there. The evenings’ proceedings started with an invocation of Udupi Sri Krishna by Ms Vandana after which Dr S.Bhaskaran, Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya gave a glimpse of the Seer’s glorious spiritual journey spanning more than 7 decades, a journey he embarked on his receiving Sanyas at the age of 8, Dr. Bhaskaran gave a detailed account of the great religious and social services to society rendered by the Swamiji and his institution, he closed his address with an emphatic appeal to the Swamiji to bless the institution and every member of the Sankara Nethralaya family.
This was followed by some more interesting insights and anecdotes from the Seer’s life by Shri P.Narayana Bhat, Secretary South India Kannada Association, Shri Bhat observed that the Pontiff of the Pejawar Mutt was the senior most saint in the world having observed 74 Chaturmasyas as on date, he recalled the great social work rendered by the Swamiji in the areas of free education, poor feeding, establishing temples and choultries and making himself present during natural calamities in any part of the country. Pranams were offered to the Seer by Dr SS.Badrinath, Dr Vasanthi Badrinath, Dr S.Bhaskaran and Dr HN.Madhavan after which he blessed Dr SS.Badrinath with a shawl.
The much awaited Anugraha Bhashanam by the Swamiji started with his emphasis to share not only the joy but the sorrow and suffering of fellow human beings, he highlighted that most people were oblivious to the suffering of others and cited that even the Devas and Asuras were not an exception to this as they did not want to partake the poison but only the precious things that surfaced when the mythological ‘sea of milk’ was curdled. The Swamiji complimented every member of the Sankara Nethralaya family present for their part in the noble initiatives and service delivered by Sankara Nethralaya. He emphasized that Medicare was a noble profession and finding a cure for other’s ailments would ensure one’s place in the next world. He had a high word of praise for Dr SS.Badrinath and remarked that he would be truly blessed for his initiatives in offering treatment, service and research. The Pontiff observed that Dr SS.Badrinath and he were engaged in a very similar service; while the learned doctor was focusing his efforts in providing external vision to the eye he was trying to open the inner eye and provide divine vision. The Swamiji added in lighter vein that Dr SS.Badrinth was more successful than him in this initiative of providing vision.
The function ended with the distribution of prasadham and blessings to the members of the Sankara Nethralaya family.
