As a part of its continuing efforts against cataract and other debilitating eye ailments, the Sankara Nethralaya in collaboration with the IIT-Madras launched a strategic offensive against the rising instance of cataract caused blindness through a jointly developed ‘Mobile eye surgical unit’. This first of its kind operation theatre on wheels is intended primarily to serve the remote and inaccessible regions which account for a majority of such cases. The surgical unit comprises of two vehicles, one which would serve as the patient preparation chamber and doctor’s lounge and the other as the operation theatre and the two would be connected by a retractable vestibule when needed.
The surgical units have been designed with every minute detail taken into account in terms of a zero bacteria surface, units to supply uninterrupted pure air, reverse osmosis plant for purified water and captive power supply through a diesel generator
The mobile eye care units were handed over to the Sankara Nethralaya in an event at the IIT after which a MoU was signed between the Director, IIT-Madras and the Chairman Sankara Nethralaya to complete the pilot project and develop more such comprehensive eye care units in the future.
