Dr. Rajeswari Mahadevan, in charge of the Department of Contact Lenses at Sankara Nethralaya, has been awarded a PhD in optometry. Dr. Rajeswari completed her PhD on the topic “study of Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenswearers for Keratoconus & Contact Lens Fitting Methods in Irregular Cornea’s” under the supervision and guidance of Dr.Prema Padmanabhan Director of Cornea and Refractive surgery, Sankara Nethralaya.
Dr. Rajeswari is only the second Indian to complete a PhD in optometry from an Indian university and is the first from an Indian university to do so in the subject of contact lens. Dr. Rajeswari also successfully completed a nine-week PROSE Clinical Fellowship from the Boston Foundation for Sight, US.
Through the fellowship she gained valuable insights on the Boston Scleral Prosthetic Device. The device is like a Scleral contact lens and helps in all irregular corneas, Steven Johnson disease, dry eyes, GVHD and other ocular surface disorders. Her areas of interest include contact lenses and related corneal infections, low vision, ocular surface diseases, clinical trials, and pediatric optometry.
