Research fellows win accolades at BITS symposium

The Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences (BITS) conducted a national symposium entitled ’Contemporary Trends in Biological and Pharmaceutical Research’ from March 12 – 13, 2011 at its premises in Pilani.

A total of 100 posters and 10 oral presentations in the field of biology and pharmacy were presented at the two-day symposium.

Ms. Vidhya S, senior research fellow (Biochemistry), Vision Research Foundation (VRF), was adjudged runner-up in the ‘Best poster’ category. Her poster on “role of adiponectin in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR),” is the first report on the elevated levels of adiponectin in vitreous of PDR. Invitro studies and insilico analysis were done to prove the significance of adiponectin in PDR.

Another senior research fellow from VRF, Ms. Iyer Gomathy Narayanan, was also adjudged runner-up in the “Best Poster” category for her poster on “role of copper transporter-1 in angiogenensis.” The poster threw light on the role CTR 1 and its interacting partners in the development of angiogensis. Recently, CTR 1 has gained significance because of its role in the influx of anticancer drugs like cisplatin and it, thus, comes across as a novel target for angiogenesis.
