Among the almost 15 million blind in India, about 6.8 million suffer from corneal blindness. If left unchecked, the number of corneally blind in the country is expected to rise to 10.6 million by 2020, unless we act now. In India, we need 1 lakh corneas per year but we collect only around 25,000. Eye donation can go a long way in addressing this concern as it will help restore vision in people with corneal blindness.
In an attempt to spread awareness on eye donation and educate the public on facts of eye donation, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, observes the National Eye Donation Fortnight (August 25 – September 8).
