Research on animal models of Retinopathy

Dr. Angayarkanni Narayanasamy, Reader & Head, Biochemistry and Cell Biology Department, Vision Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya, was awarded the ICMR overseas fellowship for Young Biomedical Scientists – 2009-2010. She completed her fellowship at the Cell Biology and Physiology Department at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, USA under her mentor Dr. Arup Das, MD, Ph.D , Director, Ophthalmology and a researcher in Diabetic Retinopathy.

Dr. Angayarkanni, who began her fellowship in the last week of February 2010, underwent training in the animal models of retinopathy such as diabetic retinopathy and oxygen induced retinopathy model (OIR) in mice.

She had the opportunity to handle the retinal dissections (microscopic) from these animal models at the molecular level which gave insights into the mechanisms of neovascularization and inflammation.

She completed her fellowship in May 2010. The extensive training that she underwent, in the course of her fellowship, will enable her to undertake research on developing drugs for retinopathies.
