It’s all in the diet!

Have you been trying to lose the extra flab of late? And in doing so, have you tried all diets that you could come across? And the flab is still there? Well, if you thought losing a few kilos was all about eating less, think again! Eating right — and more frequently — coupled with an active lifestyle is the mantra which will actually help you shed those few extra inches, according to Dr. Vinitha Krishnan, Senior Dietician, Apollo Speciality Hospital.

Dr. Krishnan, who delivered a lecture on ‘Healthy Eating & Healthy Life’ on the occasion of Women’s Day at Sankara Nethralaya on March 8, 2010, threw light on the adverse impact a stressed lifestyle and poor dietary habit has on our health.

Junk food, says Dr. Krishnan, should give way to energy giving food (cereals, millets, ghee), body building food (milk, egg, nuts, pulses) and protective food ( fruits, leafy vegetables) and fibre-rich food (whole pulses, whole flour).
Being overweight and underweight are both harmful. Eating the right amount of food, depending on how active you are, is vital.

And while your cup of coffee may boost your energy levels, each cup also means consuming 100 calories! And the gourmet has more to worry about. Dr. Krishna says that cheese, butter, pastry, biscuits — all high in saturated fat — need to be consumed in lesser quantities!

Eating what you can burn and including a well-balance diet on your platter, she says, will go a long way in ensuring that you lead a healthy life.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Must have 8-10 glasses of water
  • Never skip your breakfast
  • Include fruits and salads in your diet
  • Avoid food high in added sugar
