Medical Excellence Award for Dr. HN Madhavan


One of the world’s leading ocular microbiologists Dr. HN Madhavan, President, Vision Research Foundation, was recently presented with the International Medical Excellence Award. The award was presented by the former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Mr. Korn Dabbaransi in a glittering ceremony at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, on October 8, 2009. Also present were the former Governor of Assam and Tamil Nadu, Dr. Bhishma Narayan Singh and the former Election Commissioner of India Dr. G.V Krishnamurthy.

Dr. Madhavan was presented with the award at the seminar on “Role of Medical Professionals Towards Society” organised by the Institute of Economic Studies. Along with the award, which is conferred on individuals for their role in contributing to economic development, Dr. Madhavan was also presented with a “Certificate of Medical Excellence.”

In September, Dr. HN Madhavan, who delivered the “KAMARAJU BAPAIAH SRIMATI SAROJINI DAVI ORATION”, was honoured with a gold medal for the same. The oration was part of the XXVII IAPM AP chapter Annual Conference & CME oration which Dr. Madhavan attended at the ASRAM Medical College Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, from September 11 to 13, 2009.

About Professor Madhavan

A former professor of microbiology at the Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry, Professor Madhavan is a top virologist from Asia. An entrepreneur, Professor Madhavan has also pioneered molecular ocular microbiology for Sankara Nethralaya and for the ophthalmic world. He played a vital role in developing the Macro Vision Chip — a vision and brain infection chip, helps in the rapid diagnosis of infection and saves vision. Dr. TS Rao, advisor, department of Biotechnology, Government of India, who recently visited the institute’s research facility, commended Dr. Madhavan on his work and described him as someone who “contributes a lot to society.”  Highly respected and loved by all at Sankara Nethralya, Professor Madhavan continues to be an inspiration to his colleagues and friends.
