The Medical Research Foundation bid adieu to yet another batch of students at the 21st graduation ceremony on September 12, 2009. Graduates and post graduates from the Elite School of Optometry as well as those who completed the MSMLT programme — all off campus collaborative programmes with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani — were awarded their respective degrees.
In his convocation address, Professor R. Sethuraman, Vice Chancellor, SASTRA University spoke on the role and scope of optometry in tackling visual impairment globally and the need to churn out more institutionally qualified optometrists to meet the national requirement of 2 lakh optometrists as against the existing 5,000. Applauding the role of the Elite School of Optometry in training manpower, Prof. Sethuraman said ESO
has “the capabilities to build a scalable and sustainable model” that will produce world class optometrists.
Twenty five students from the Elite School of Optometry were awarded their BS Optometry degree. Institutional awards in various specialities were also given on the occasion. There were seven PhD degrees awarded this year. Best students of MSMLT, BS Ophthalmic Assistant, MPhil & BS Optometry read out their valedictory addresses. Out of the 25 ESO graduates while 14 will join eye hospitals 4 have decided to pursue higher studies abroad and five have joined the MPhil programme at the institute.
